EHTPD: Burglar Gave Full Confession

first_imgThe man police say burglarized two Northwest Woods residences on Sammys Beach Road on either January 30 or 31 wrote and signed a statement that amounts to a full confession, according to the East Hampton Town Police Department. Justin Williams, 23, of Middle Island, was charged with two counts of burglary after his arrest the afternoon of February 24. The alleged crime, it appears, was one of opportunity. It is not clear from the documents on file at East Hampton Town Justice Court on which of the last two days of January the alleged crimes occurred, since both dates are used on different documents.Among the items police reported stolen were a nickel-plated 12-gauge Remington 870 Special Purpose Marine Magnum Pump-Action, a Bowie knife, and a bottle of Lucien Crochet Sancerre. Though the police distributed a surveillance camera image of the suspect, which was published by local media outlets, including The Independent, it was the bottle of Sancerre that allegedly did Williams in.Williams told East Hampton detectives he was working for One Call Concepts Locating Services at the time of the incidents. He specializes in locating and flagging various underground electrical, telephone, and television cables, as well as water lines at sites before construction. On January 31, he said in his statement, he was assigned to a property on Sammys Beach Road, where the house was about to be demolished and replaced with another structure. When Williams arrived at the assigned address, he found two town employees posting a permit on the site. After the employees left the property, Williams allegedly entered the house through an unlocked door. He reportedly told police in his confession that he “rummaged” through the house. Williams took a pair of blue Nike Lunarglide sneakers from the closet, and an open bottle of Lucien Crochet Sancerre from the refrigerator.According to statements on file with police, after Williams finished drinking the wine, he left the bottle on the front yard, put on the Nikes, and went for “a walk on the beach.” After that, he entered a neighboring house, reportedly breaking and entering through a window in the living room. There, he allegedly found the shotgun and the knife. Williams reportedly told police in the statement he broke into a shed on the first property, as well.Williams allegedly said the gun and knife were the only things he kept, and were hidden in the boiler room of the house he lives in with his family in Middle Island. Both items have since been retrieved by the police. When police pulled Williams over on Montauk Highway in Wainscott on the afternoon of February 24, they had already obtained a latent fingerprint from the bottle of wine matching Williams’s right ring finger. Police had sent the empty bottle, along with a couple of other items they said Williams had left on the front yard, to the Suffolk County Crime Lab on February 5.In the statement, Williams reportedly apologized for his actions, and wrote that he had never before abused his position at his place of work. Williams was released after being arraigned February 25 and is due back in court March 12.t.e@indyeastend.com Sharelast_img read more

New video technology to conduct remote criminal hearings

first_imgNew video equipment is being introduced to over 100 courts as the government increasingly turns to technology to conduct hearings remotely and keep the justice system running during the Covid-19 pandemic.A videoconferencing system from specialist supplier Kinly will initially be rolled out to 60 magistrates’ courts and 48 Crown courts open. The Ministry of Justice says the system securely connects to the existing justice video network which links police stations and prisons to courts. Parties in remand, custody time limit and sentencing hearings will be able to click on a link in an email invite or in the Crown court digital case system to join. The Kinly Cloud Video Platform will not be used for jury trials, which have currently been suspended. A judge will decide whether it is appropriate to use the platform on a case-by-case basis. No defendant will appear from their own home and sentencing will not take place unless the defendant is in custody or physically present in the court. The ministry hopes that, by the end of next week, 16 magistrates’ courts and nine Crown courts can access the platform. HM Courts & Tribunals Service has already the technology to run 412 remand hearings.Courts minister Chris Philp said: ‘We have already seen a huge rise in the number of cases being heard remotely, and this innovation will ensure the wheels of justice continue to turn.’Statistics published by HMCTS show a steep increase in the use of video technology in the courts and tribunals – from 750 hearings by the end of March to 1,250 hearings by mid-April.Law Society president Simon Davis said the platform was another tool to keep the wheels of justice turning during the pandemic. However, he said ‘such a widespread rollout of remote hearings could profoundly alter how we deliver justice – and thus must be monitored carefully to ensure its quality is not adversely affected’.last_img read more

The $11.4 million M2 highway re-opens in Johannesburg

first_imgZimbabwe targets 11 million carats of diamonds by 2023 -mines minister The M2 highway in Johannesburg while it was still under reconstruction./Photo by Felix Dlangamandla The M2 highway in Johannesburg while it was still under reconstruction./Photo by Felix DlangamandlaJohannesburg motorists on Monday no longer needed to battle congestion, detours and frustration as the M2 bridge was reopened following $11.4 million overhaul that took close to eight months.JMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar told eNCA that 300 officers had to be deployed every morning and afternoon to deal with traffic congestion since the start of the reconstruction in February this year.Minnaar said criminals took advantage of the heavy traffic, robbing motorists of cellphones and laptops, which necessitated the deployment of a specialized crime-prevention unit. Hundreds of security guards were also deployed by the private sector.Outgoing City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba on Thursday said the initiative was part of his legacy as he prepares to bow out at the end of November.“The reopening of the M2 motorway, as scheduled, is one of my proudest moments as the mayor of the City of Johannesburg. It is the culmination of many months of sheer hard work by engineers and construction workers led by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).The M2 motorway, which is more than 60 years old, carries approximately 10 500 vehicles per hour in both directions during peak hours. The closure was necessitated by continuous monitoring and the bridge visual conditions assessment, which indicated that the structural integrity of the concrete elements was severely reduced.Mashaba said eight more bridge structures along the M2 required repairs and rehabilitation, but the JRA does not envisage these requiring any further closures.Related Facebook opens first African office in Johannesburgcenter_img Facebook opens new Africa office in Johannesburglast_img read more

Aklan LGU hopeful for Boracay reopening to foreign tourists

first_imgThe alliance of private and public sectors for Boracay Island are optimistic the international travel could restart safely with health protocols in accordance with the guidelines formulated by the Inter-Agency Task Force in the management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.   Boracay Foundation Inc., Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Boracay Land Transport Multi-purpose Cooperative, Caticlan Boracay Transport Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Compliant Association of Boracay and Boracay Watersports Association are for travel bubble to kick start sectors such as tourism, hospitality and travel.   With necessary health precautions in place, according to Bautista, hundreds of businesses and workers are hopeful to bring back the tourists to the famed beaches of Boracay Island./PN Most business groups in Boracay Island favored reconnecting the island to South Korea, China or Taiwan which make up almost 85 percent of international visitors to Boracay Island.  To recall, the island begun accepting visitors from the region on June 16 after BIATF started to ease restrictions in one of the destinations battered by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.   The border closure as stated in SB’s Sept. 10 Resolution No. 149 urged the acting mayor to place the municipality’s borders closed following the first local transmission in the province of Aklan. The affected stakeholders urged the provincial government to study the travel bubbles or travel corridors between Boracay Island and neighboring countries with low-risk countries or cities to allow the movement of tourists.  Gov. Florencio Miraflores of Aklan and acting mayor Frolibar Bautista of Malay signed a joint resolution No. 2020-01 asking the BIATF to save the travel and tourism industry from heavy losses.  The councilors floated the proposal after they raised concerns on a local transmission of Covid-19 reported in Kalibo, Aklan. In his reply, Bautista issued on Sept. 12 Executive No. 46 to veto the recommendations of the councilors. The acting mayor also appealed to residents to strictly follow the minimum health protocols of the Department of Health to curb the spread of COVID-19. “The municipality is classified as Area Outside Buffer Zone based on the zoning containment and strategy on LGUs (local government units by the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force on Covid-19,” Bautista stressed. In related development, Bautista declined the proposal of Sangguniang Bayan (SB) for a temporary border closure. Boracay Island in Malay Aklan, one of the top beaches in the Philippines, is blessed with a long stretch of powdery-white sand beach and crystal clear waters. BOY RYAN ZABAL/AKEAN FORUM BORACAY – Local authorities in Aklan are waiting for the green light from the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force (BIATF) to open this world-famous island to domestic tourists and foreigners.  The BIATF, through Tourism secretary Bernadette Puyat-Romulo, has yet to give the go signal for Boracay to reopen, specifically for international tourists and local tourists outside Western Visayas. In response to stakeholders, residents and displaced workers, the local government units held a dialogue on Aug. 15 supporting the proposal to open Boracay to tourism starting Oct. 1, 2020.  A hospital staff contracted the viral illness, prompting Kalibo mayor Emerson Lachica and the local task force to enforce granular lockdown in two sitios of Barangay Bakhaw Norte on Sept. 11.   The Malay municipal government already adjusted its strategies by opening borders and easing of restrictions to holidaymakers in the region and not compromises the health and economy.  Hotels operators and businesses in Boracay Island have been paying the price if international travel remains shut down to travelers.   last_img read more

Wow! Uber Canangkan Program Taksi Drone

Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading… RelatedJaunt’s ROSA Gyrodyne – Rancangan Taksi Udara eVTOL Paling Aman di Dunia06/04/2020In “Featured”Sukses Terbang Perdana, Taksi Udara Uber Mahakarya Boeing Mengudara di Tahun 202326/01/2019In “Featured”Selangkah Lagi, Uber Akan Operasikan Taksi Udara28/04/2017In “Basis Aplikasi” Uber, perusahaan taksi online yang sudah merambah internasional kembali membuat rencana baru untuk moda transportasinya.
